The Damascus Chamber of Commerce announced on Tuesday the formation of its new board of directors for the period from 2025 to 2028, following elections described as free and fair, with the attendance of all members, along with the Director of the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce, Amer Al-Homsi.
The results of the Executive Office elections were as follows: Issam Zuhair Al-Ghreiwati as President of the Chamber, Ghassan Riad Sukkar as First Vice President, Dr. Laila Salah Al-Samman as Second Vice President, Ammar Muhammad Saeed Al-Bardan as Secretary, Muhannad Muhammad Jamal Al-Din Sharaf as Treasurer of the Chamber, and Farid Talal Khoury and Muhammad Darwish Safouh Al-Ajlani as members of the Chamber’s office.
The Chamber President said Zuhair Al-Ghariwati: “Syria has become a free country today, and its trade is free. We will not accept that the positions of Chairman and members of the Executive Office and members of the Board of Directors in the Chamber be merely a title or prestige, but rather a national and professional responsibility that requires the concerted efforts of all.”
Al-Ghariwati pointed to the importance of the next economic phase, emphasizing the need to attract foreign capital and investments, and creating a suitable climate for the return of Syrian businessmen to their homeland after the country was liberated from the corrupt regime that had created a state of terror and fear for traders and investors.
Minister of Economy and Industry Nidal Al-Shaar stated that the ministry did not interfere in the formation of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, noting that the elections were conducted with complete transparency.
He added in a post: “I received the formation via WhatsApp. Congratulations to everyone… Together we build Syria.”
Al-Ghariwati is nicknamed “Shahbandar.” He has been a Damascus merchant since 2008, according to Al-Eqtisadi magazine. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical and industrial engineering from the University of Kansas in the United States.
He left Syria after the outbreak of the revolution for the United States, where he founded more than 20 companies, including Audi and Nissan dealerships. He was also active in the fuel distribution and parking sectors there.
